Brake Safety Week is just around the corner!

If you’re unfamiliar with Brake Safety Week, it’s part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Operation Airbrake, a comprehensive program in partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators. Brake Safety Week 2023 is August 20th through August 26th. Throughout the week, commercial motor vehicle inspectors will be conducting inspections of commercial motor vehicle brake system components and removing commercial motor vehicles that have brake-related out-of-service violations from the roadways.

Keeping your brake system in good condition is critical to maintaining a safe vehicle. Brake related violations comprise the largest percentage of all out-of-service violations cited during roadside inspections. During Brake Safety Week 2022, 13.3% of the commercial vehicles inspected were placed out-of-service for brake-related violations. A poorly maintained brake system reduces braking capacity and stopping distance which is a huge risk to drivers and to the safety of others.

Here are four tips to help maintain your brake system and pass inspection during Brake Safety Week 2023.

Know What Inspectors Look For

This year, Brake Safety Week focuses on brake lining and pad violations. While inspectors will be looking at your brake system as a whole, the inspectors will be giving specific attention to brake lining and brake pads. Check out these 10 tips from inspectors to help ensure your brake linings and pads are up to grade. Also, get familiar with the inspection procedure so you know exactly what inspectors are looking for during the inspection process.

Have Your Paperwork Ready To Go!

Fumbling around for your paperwork is never a good look. Having your paperwork easily accessible cuts out any unnecessary stress when inspectors ask to see it.

Do a Pre-Trip Inspection

Before hitting the road, always conduct a pre-trip inspection to make sure your vehicle is safe to drive. During this pre-trip inspection, test for leaking fluid, check for cracks or failing parts, and inspect brake linings for thickness and wear. This brake inspection checklist from the CVSA is a great resource to help ensure your brakes are at peak performance.

Don’t Skip Routine Maintenance

Routine maintenance not only saves you money in the long run, but it can help your vehicle stay as safe as possible. If a highly skilled diesel technician regularly has eyes on your vehicle, they will be able to spot any issues with the brakes and bring the problem to your attention. With 35 locations across eight states, you’re likely never too far from a TEC Equipment location. Our technicians are committed to making sure you and your truck are safe and road ready.

With these tips, we hope you pass inspection during Brake Safety Week 2023 with flying colors.
