Four Tips to Help You Survive Brake Safety Week 2022
August 22nd, 2022
Brake Safety Week is here! If you’re unfamiliar with Brake Safety Week, its part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Operation Airbrake, a comprehensive program in partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators. Brake Safety Week 2022 happens from August 21st to August 27th. Throughout the week, commercial motor vehicle inspectors will be conducting inspections of commercial trucks and buses to ensure their brake systems are up to code.
Brakes are one of the most crucial parts of your truck, and keeping them in good condition is key to a safe truck, as well as making sure you get a passing grade when your truck gets inspected. Here are four tips to help maintain your brakes and be ready for Brake Safety Week and beyond.
Know What Inspectors Look For
This year, Brake Safety Week focuses on hoses and tubing, and while inspectors will be paying attention to every part of your brakes, they’ll be giving specific attention to the hoses and tubing. So, double and even triple check them. The CVSA offers handy info to drivers, like this brake inspection checklist that can help ensure your brakes are at top performance.
Have Your Paperwork Ready To Go!
Nothing is worse than fumbling around looking for paperwork. Having it easily accessible makes the process that much easier when inspectors ask to see it and will avoid any unnecessary stress on the entire situation.
Do a Pre-Trip Inspection
Always conduct a pre-trip inspection before you hit the road to make sure your truck is safe to drive. During this pre-trip inspection, test for leaking fluid, check for cracks or failing parts, and inspect brake linings for thickness and wear. Doing a pre-trip inspection every day will help identify the parts of your truck that need attention.
Don’t Skip Routine Maintenance
If a highly skilled diesel technician regularly has eyes on your vehicle, they will be able to spot any issues with the brakes and bring the problem to your attention. With 32 locations across eight states, it’s likely you’re never too far from a TEC location. Our technicians are committed to making sure you and your truck are safe and road-ready.
With these tips, Brake Safety Week will hopefully be a breeze and you’ll pass your inspection with flying colors.
