Common Insurance Questions
What kind of truck insurance do I need?
The type of truck insurance you need depends on several factors, including the state you operate in, the number of trucks in your fleet, and the type of cargo you transport. Typically, all carriers should have commercial auto liability, motor truck cargo, physical damage coverage, non-owned trailer, or trailer interchange coverage.
Do I need permits to operate nationwide?
If you plan to operate in multiple states, you will need to obtain a permit from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
Is there a penalty for canceling a policy?
Different trucking insurance providers maintain different cancellation policies. Many do impose a “Pro Rate Cancellation.”
How can I take a truck off my policy?
Removing a truck from your insurance policy typically requires that you sell it, if you own it, or terminate a lease, if you are leasing it. Proof of sale/total out that is acceptable must be provided to remove a truck.
What is Non-Trucking Liability Insurance (NTL)?
Definition:
NTL protects truck owners or owner-operators from accident liability anytime the truck is on unofficial business. Non-trucking liability (Bobtail Coverage) provides limited liability insurance for owner-operators who are permanently leased to an ICC-regulated carrier. It provides limited liability protection when the owner-operator is not under dispatch, nor pulling a loaded trailer.
Business Use Excluded:
It does not cover business-related activities.
